Specifying User-Deﬁned Criteria

In addition to predeﬁned criteria, the Edit Filters and Create Filter Template

windows provide a “User-Deﬁned” criterion choice for most protocols. The

User-Deﬁned option allows you to set up ﬁltering criteria based on bit patterns

within a packet’s header that are not supported in predeﬁned criteria.

Setting up user-deﬁned criteria is similar to using up predeﬁned criteria, except

you must specify the criterion’s location within the packet. (With predeﬁned

criteria, the locations are established.) Refer to Chapter 3 for the supported

protocol header reference points you can use to specify user-deﬁned trafﬁc ﬁlter

criteria.

To specify user-deﬁned criteria:

1. In the Edit Filters or Create Filter Template window, select the

User-Deﬁned option from the Criteria menu.

The Add User-Deﬁned Field window appears (Figure 6-15). In this window,

you specify the criterion’s location.
