SNMP, RMON, BOOTP, DHCP, and RARP Concepts
114070 Rev. B 2-17
Event Trap Considerations
In order for RMON to generate trap events, you must set up the SNMP managers
table based on the SNMP community names (for example, Public) you are using
with the network management application (for example, Optivity LAN or Optivity
Analysis) and the hosts on which you are running applications. If you fail to make
these changes, the router will be unable to send trap events to the network
management station. Refer to Chapter 3 for instructions on how to set up an
SNMP managers table.
When you set up the SNMP managers table, you can use the SNMP community
names that the network management application uses and modify the trap
receiving tables on the router to use these names. Or, you can configure the router
to use specific SNMP community names and modify the network management
software to use these names.
When configuring SNMP community managers, you must assign each manager a
specific IP address; you cannot specify a wildcard for the community manager
address. Also, you must configure community managers to receive all traps, not
just generic traps. You do this by changing the Trap Types parameter in the SNMP
Manager window from “Generic” (the default) to “All.” For more information
about changing communities and community manager parameters, refer to
Chapter 3.
RMON Interoperability Issues
This section describes RMON memory use and interoperability issues you should
consider when using RMON network management applications with the Ethernet
DCM.
This section assumes that you have a good understanding of each RMON group,
and does not refer to the low-level details of the MIB, such as RMON MIB
objects. Refer to “RMON MIB Gr
oups,” earlier in this chapter, and RFC 1757 for
information about each RMON group.
